The statue of Milan Rastislav Štefánik and the lion on Bratislava's M. R. Štefánik Embankment have a colourful history. The original monument, unveiled in 1938 on the 20th anniversary of the founding of Czechoslovakia, comprised a pylon bearing the Czechoslovak state emblem and a statue of Štefánik in an aviator's suit, designed by the sculptor Břetislav Kafka. The lion on the pylon symbolised Czechoslovak state power and was part of this monument. During the years of the communist regime, the statue of Štefánik was destroyed (1954). The lion, however, survived and became the basis of the restored monument, which was unveiled again at its present location in 2009.
